Are you an older job seeker? Maybe you’ve decided to change careers. Maybe you’ve been moved out of your position. Maybe you’ve been raising children. Maybe you’ve realized that early retirement isn’t for you.
First, congratulations! This is an exciting time in your life and the possibilities are vast. Second, don’t panic! This can be both an exciting time and a scary time and we have a book that can help. It’s called, Great Jobs for Everyone 50+: Finding Work That Keeps You Happy and Healthy…and Pays the Bills by Kerry Hannon (Call Number: 331.702 HAN)
The first part of the book explores jobs in various fields. Much like the Occupational Outlook Handbook, Hannon details the nitty-gritty information about the job, the pay range, and the qualifications needed.
The second part of the book is in a workshop format. In this section, the author looks at everything surrounding a job search for the 50+ age group. She tackles subjects like, how to prepare for a job switch or job search, overcoming bias, adding new skills, how to network, how to interview, and engaging in social media including how to create a good LinkedIn profile. For example, she suggests you don’t try to hide your age. Instead, market your age as a plus, “You need to be able to articulate your value. Strut your stuff.”
Hannon is realistic, acknowledging that a job search after 50 requires a certain amount of “research, soul-searching, and swagger”. She is aware of the challenges in a 50+ job search and addresses each concern that might be raised. You won’t need to read the entire book. You can choose the parts that are relevant to you, leaving you with plenty of time to conduct your job search instead of reading about it.
So, if you are a 50+ job seeker, pick up this book from Plano Public Library and discover what new adventure awaits you.
